One-year POST-DOC
CHAIR Systems Science and Energetic Challenge (SSEC)

Profile: System engineering

Ecole Centrale Paris (www.ecp.fr) and Supelec (www.supelec.fr) are two of the top five French engineering schools (“Grandes Ecoles”). They recruit students with excellent analytical skills through a national competition, after two years of intensive training in Fundamental Science (maths, physics…). They deliver engineering degrees at the Master of Science and PhD levels. Centrale Paris and Supelec share a strong record in terms of academic research and have strong connection with industry.

Together, ECP and Supelec have launched a Chair on Systems Science and the Energetic Challenge (SSEC) with the support of Electricite’ De France, EDF, a major electrical company in the world. The Chair objective is to model, simulate, analyze and optimize complex energy systems integrating all relevant aspects, from engineering to operation and control, from reliability design to maintenance, from safety to environment. The activities of the SSEC Chair include teaching, research with strong impact on industrial applications, and executive education.

As of today, the SSEC Chair team consists of two full time members, a senior professor, director of the Chair (Enrico Zio), one assistant professor (Yanfu Li), two post-docs (Carlos Ruiz Mora and Valeria Vitelli, and a handful of PhD students (8 from all over the World).

Eventually, it is planned that one other assistant professor will be added to the team.

Two one-year post-doc positions are open for application of talented and dynamic young scientists with a proven strong background in mathematics, probability, modelling, optimization, system engineering and analysis, reliability and safety engineering, risk analysis; expertise in energy systems and technologies (e.g. power grids, nuclear, renewable) would also be useful. Most of all, applicants for this position should have an outstanding curriculum of studies and a record of high quality research. Open mind and curiosity for innovative solutions to practical problems of system engineering are also necessary attributes. Finally, the candidates must have a positive attitude for working in team, under the supervision of the Chair Director.

Preliminary experience in teaching and cooperation with industry would be appreciated.
Fluency in English is required; fluency in French is appreciated but not mandatory.

The position can lead to a permanent Assistant Professor position within the team.

Applications should be complete of CV, list of university courses and grades, letter of motivation, two letters of presentation (directly sent by the authors) and sent to:

Deadline for applications is December 7, 2012.

PS: Only those candidates who will be judged potentially fit for the position will be contacted further.
