M1 Applied Sciences

The M1 is founded on very open, pluri-disciplinary knowledge covering the fields of physics, mechanics, civil engineering, transfer sciences and processes. It is based on the first (S5, S6) and second (S7, S8) years of Centrale Paris, adding a degree of specialization and depth, placing the accent strongly on personal, laboratory and research work.

The M1 year is based on principles to facilitate obtaining a basic training through initial, varied programs whilst maintaining the opportunities for openings for M2 and preserving the possibilities for re-orientation during the cursus.

Pedagogy

The M1 year is designed around:

  • basic courses comprising:
    • Majors in the dominant disciplines in the Applied Sciences course,
    • Minors contributing additional scientific culture, to be chosen from a wide range of subjects.
  • personal activities comprising:
    • an English language course essential for research skills, or French as a foreign language for non-francophone students, to achieve a level to be able follow the teaching,
    • a project with an accredited laboratory, over a period of two semesters.

The discovery of research occupations comes from participating in forums, conferences and seminars, and visits to laboratories. These activities (validated without ECTS) show students the research activities in large organizations and companies.
The validations of the different programs and activities are specifically defined for each course in each subject.

Each student is supervised by an academic tutor.

Program

The first year of the “Applied Sciences” course comprises:

  • a Major for 30 ECTS consisting of 6 UE (Teaching Units) of 5 ECTS each, of which 4 are mandatory and 2 to be chosen,
  • a Minor for 15 ECTS consisting of 3 UE of 5 ECTS each. One of these UE must be experimental and must include two experimental modules, to be chosen.
  • a language UE (scientific English or French for non-francophone students) of 48h and 4 ECTS,
  • a study and research project (220h programmed time and 11 ECTS).

Semester 1 (30 ECTS)

  • Major + Minor: 25 ECTS
  • English (or French as a Foreign Language): 2 ECTS
  • Laboratory project (progress report and defense): 3 ECTS

Semester 2 (30 ECTS)

  • Major + Minor: 20 ECTS
  • English 2 (or) French as a Foreign Language: 2 ECTS
  • Laboratory project (progress report and defense): 8 ECTS

The estimated average workload (including individual work) is 35h/week.
